Chiropractic during pregnancy

Expectant mothers make up a very large and important part of my clientele, and one of my professional goals is to raise awareness of the wonderful role of chiropractic and movement during pregnancy. A chiropractic visit during pregnancy is useful precisely in order to prevent problems from arising and to learn how to help yourself with exercises and positions during both pregnancy and childbirth.

Reasons why, during pregnancy,
you might come for a visit:

  • Lower back pain
  • Symphysis pain
  • Headaches
  • Upper-back tension
  • Pain radiating into the buttock/leg
  • “restless legs”
  • Preventive check-up
  • Influencing the baby's birth position (in the last trimester) ↓

The baby's optimal position

As a special interest, I work a lot with pregnant women whose baby has not yet found an optimal position in the last trimester (or who are facing an external version) and who would like to try whether the baby could be helped to move naturally.
Chiropractic and exercises can also be of great benefit before an external version procedure, to make it succeed more readily. Be sure to get in touch — in such cases I can usually offer urgent appointments within a few days.
The chiropractor does not turn the baby manually. Light and gentle techniques (e.g. Webster) are used to create balance in the woman's spine and pelvis, the necessary areas are released and home exercises are given, so that it is easier for the baby to settle itself into a more comfortable position.

Postpartum

It would also be useful to come for a check-up after the birth, even together with the baby. Postpartum, the main complaints are related to awkward positions when holding and breastfeeding the baby and to changes in movement habits. For diastasis and pelvic-floor problems I recommend turning directly to women's physiotherapist Helle Nurmsalu (https://kohukliinik.ee/).

Visit

During the visit we discuss the course of the pregnancy, the birth plan, earlier health history (including pregnancies and births), injuries, physical activity, nutrition, work and much more. Next, various posture, muscle and orthopaedic tests are done and spinal mobility is examined.
Treatment techniques are used according to need. These may include: adjustment of the vertebrae, various joint mobilisation techniques, muscle massage, trigger-point massage and stretches, the use of kinesio tape and much more.
Movement and exercise definitely play an important role, and you can get plenty of tips on them from the chiropractor.

For pregnant women there is a comfortable large pillow with an opening on site, on which you can comfortably lie face down too.
